The University Grants Commission (UGC) has changed the criteria for qualifying the National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted to determine qualification for appointment as faculty and grant of research fellowship.
As per the revised criteria, only 6% of the candidates who take the test would now be declared as qualified.
Earlier, top 15% of the candidates in each subject and category, who obtained the minimum required marks according to the category of the candidates were declared qualified.

Though the percentage of candidates to be declared as qualified from now on has been drastically reduced, the higher education regulator justified the move.
"As such the number of candidates who would qualify in the future NET Examinations is likely to increase," it said issuing a notice on Friday evening.
Highlighting data of qualifying percentage out of appeared candidates in the previous 4 UGC-NET examinations, the regular said 4.83% candidates qualified the nationwide test held on June 2015, 4.96% December 2015, 4.08% July 2016 and 3.99 % in January 2017.
