“One best book is equal to hundred good friends
but one good friend is equal to a library.”
―
The above quote of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is justified with the newly lunched scheme of Tamilnadu Government "Friends of Library". Dr. Kalam said a good friend is equal to a Library, Now the "Friends of Library" scheme of the TN government engaged volunteers for becoming a good friend of the library.
The Tamil Nadu government launched the 'Friends of Library' scheme here, wherein books will be personally provided to those who are unable to visit state-run libraries. The service of volunteers will be used for this purpose. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inaugurated the scheme. In its first phase, the scheme will cover 2,500 libraries including 31 district libraries. Differently abled persons, senior citizens, children and hospital in-patients among others who cannot come to a library will benefit from the scheme, but the beneficiaries should be registered with the library concerned. The role of volunteers here would be crucial, who would be given ID cards by the librarians and they will deliver and collect the books from the readers. They have planned to register at least five volunteers for each library initially. There are about 300 full time libraries and 463 branch libraries, among others, in the State. It would be launched in other districts soon and he welcomed more volunteers to join the movement.
The main objectives of the programme is to promote reading habit and reaches library resources to the remote area and needy readers who have interest in reading but unable to reach the library. A knowledge-based society was to be promoted as a result of this programme.
Tamilnandu is the birth state of Dr. SR Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. As per the Second law of his Five Laws of Library Science "Every Reader His/Her Book" If a reader is unable to reach the library, then the library should reach to him.
